Iris Plants
Iris plants are tall flowering perennials. They primarily are native to the deciduous woodlands or the northeastern and northern United States and southern Canada. Iris plants come in bulb or rhizome form, and have lovely large blooms. Iris plants are relatively easy to grow, and most can last several years if given the proper growing conditions.

The flowers of iris plants are large and bright. They range in color from white to yellow, blue, red, yellow, pink and purple. There are even some blooms that are nearly black. The flowers generally have six petals. Three of these are upright, called standards, and the other three are drooping, called falls. The falls of bearded iris plant have ‘beards,’ which are fuzzy bands down the center of the petal. Many blooms of iris plants are frilly, and some are relatively flat.

The foliage of iris plants is long and slender. The sword-like leaves reach up and have long, parallel veins running their length. The stems are tall and slender, and many are very sturdy to hold up the often heavy flowers. The color of the foliage ranges from light to dark green, and some varieties even have a bluish tint to them. The foliage of iris plants will often turn yellow in the fall.

Iris plants grow best in full sun. Some shade will be tolerated, but this is detrimental to the blooms. There are some colors of bloom that will keep their color longer if provided some shade during the hotter afternoon sunlight. Iris plants also prefer soil that is moist and well drained to thrive.
