| While
many iris plants come in the form of a rhizome, which is a tough,
fleshy root, some iris plants can be purchased in bulb form.
Iris bulbs are modified buds surrounded by thick, fleshy bulb
scales. The bulb scales emerge from the basal plate, which is
a compressed stem. The purpose of the iris bulb is to act as
a storage organ, very similar to the more common rhizomes. Iris
bulbs closely resemble onion bulbs. |
The
blooms of iris bulbs are very similar to the blooms of irises
grown from rhizomes. Oftentimes, the bulb is created from
buds removed from the rhizome grown plants. Iris bulbs are
planted in a similar manner to all other bulb plants. Iris
bulbs are spring flowering bulbs, and are considered perennials,
though they do not always return the following year.
Gardeners
can purchase iris bulbs from many locations. Iris bulbs are
often found at local garden centers or nurseries. The local
nurseries would generally carry only plants that are hardy
to their specific climate, and are therefore a good choice
when attempting to find iris bulbs. Iris bulbs are also available
for purchase from several Internet and mail order plant stores.
These places often provide a warranty for a limited time,
in case the plants do not grow.
